I recently saw Piku .The movie actually took me back in my recent past. My grandfather also suffered with constipation in his last days. We used to have some what same kind of talks at home. The movie also showed the will of a father to live where in he starts cycling to avoid death. This is another issue that is fear of death.. We will talk about the second issue in my upcoming blog.

Today, let’s talk about constipation, the issue most of the homosapiens suffers from.

Many people wrongly assume that they are constipated because they don’t have a daily bowel movement. In fact, it’s perfectly normal for bowels to move as often as three times a day or as infrequently as once in 3 or 4 days. Regularity is different for everyone. Strange isn’t it!

As I said in my introduction, I will talk about diseases which I have researched. If you want me to search or talk about any disease, please feel free to ask me and I would love to do it and share the information with you.

Getting back to topic, there are two types of constipations

Atonic and Spastic.

Atonic occurs when the colon muscles are weak and lack tone; whereas Spastic sometimes called irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by irregular bowel movement.

Atonic constipation, the more common of the two, develops when the diet lacks adequate fluids and fiber. A sedentary lifestyle is also another common cause.

Spastic constipation can be caused by stress nervous disorder, excessive smoking, irritating foods, and obstructions of the colon.

People aged 65 and older shouldn’t think that they are constipated if they begin to have some difficulty passing stool that is down near the opening. The muscles and nerves of the digestive system may degenerate somewhat by the age65, creating slight difficulty. That does not mean that the individual has constipation. But if your stools are usually small and hard, if you find yourself having to strain, or if three or more days pass between your bowel movements, then you genuinely have a problem. Please consult your doctor as constipation can be one sign of conditions like diverticular disease and colon cancer. It can also lead to hemorrhoids.

Chronic constipation, obesity, pregnancy, and an inherited predisposition are common causes of hemorrhoids- varicose veins in the anal area. Most hemorrhoids are symptoms- free, but some cause itching, pain and bleeding, especially during bouts of constipation.
Avoiding constipation and maintaining a normal weight will often eliminate hemorrhoid symptoms. Some sufferers find that curries, chilies and other hot, spicy foods increase discomfort during bowel movements. Citrus fruits and other acidic foods may also be irritating. In severe case, chronic blood loss from hemorrhoids can cause anemia .A doctor may prescribe iron supplements and removal of the hemorrhoids. Eating iron- rich foods can also help restore the body’s iron reserves.
